Self Portrait Saturday

Today I'm linking up with Dana at The Wonder Forest For Self Portrait Saturdays.  She just recently started the series and I keep meaning to join in but never got around to it until today.  Self portraits are definitely a weakness of mine.  I don't particularly like being in front of the camera and I struggle with it a lot.  There was a theme this week [props].

I started thinking up a prop when I saw my little pink phone receiver on my desk.  I immediately had a vision pop into my head of what I wanted my photo to look like.  The first photo you see here is the idea of the vision but the execution, in my mind, is not right.  I took a ton of photos trying to get it right but it still wasn't coming along quite right.  Don't you hate that?  I run across this problem a lot when drawing but rarely in photography.  Since I wasn't really happy with this concept I just decided to move on and see what I came up with.

After I exhausted the pink phone I decided to pick up one of my vintage cameras and just take a few quick shots.  I love that first one except that the camera is crooked.  THAT DRIVES ME CRAZY.  Ha!  I took a bunch but couldn't get it quite right.  Another thing that bugs me about self portraits?  You have to go look at the camera to see if the image is right.  Maybe I need to invest in a mirror to put behind the camera so I can see the setup...

What do you think?  Did I do ok?  Have you tried to take self portraits?  Were you happy with them?

  1. You have such GORGEOUS blue eyes! Love the photos. And I totally know what you mean, when you have an idea in mind.. but cant seem to truly convey it into real life or on a photo! I was dealing with the same thing with my portraits! I took over 100, just to get the few I posted! Anyways... BTW, I LOVE that pink phone!! Where did you get it!?

  7. My favorite is actually the first one. It's so iconic-looking - it could be an ad for something! I love it.

  9. First off, let me have those jeans. I'll gladly wait for them while they ship. :p

Secondly, I have always felt iffy about my own self portraits; I'm not super keen on my own look and my photography skills. I know that so many bloggers do it, but I just can't get behind it for myself.

    Lastly, you're great.

  15. they are adorable. i think that when you take self portraits, you get super critical of everything. i have a really hard time and don't like to do so at all.
i always want to see the set up and behind the scenes of when people take self portraits, just to see what they are doing with their bodies, hands, faces etc.
