Teeny Tutorial: Stuffed Fabric Letter DIY

I hope you all are enjoying the baby shower so far!  I decided to do this tutorial because I saw something like this somewhere a while ago (could I be any more vague?) and I loved the idea.  I thought it would be fairly simple even with my rudimentary sewing skills and you could even do it by hand though it would take quite a bit longer.  As it is it took me about 2.5-3 hours from start to finish.  Not TOO bad but it's not a superquick project either.  I guess it would depend on the length of the name as well.

I decided to do my baby's name now that it's pretty certain she will be Margaux :)  But this would look supercute in just an inspiring word, or your own name, floating above your desk or bed or what have you.

First thing's first, pick some pretty fabric!  The walls in the baby's room are green so the accent colors are bright pink, turquoise and yellow.  These were the closest colors I had so I went with that...

Cut out the letters of your word/name leaving a lot of extra space.  If you cut them too small they will be skinny mini letters and quite hard to stuff.  I think I cut my letters between 3 and 4 inches wide all the way around...

Next, start sewing around the edges of your letters.  I decided to leave the rough edges out because I like that frayed look.  If you would also like that look, go ahead and sew the letters with the right side of the fabric facing out...as in the back of the fabrics are touching each other.  If you'd like a cleaner look, you would sew with the right sides of the fabrics touching...but I'm not sure exactly how you would negotiate the letters with holes in the middle (like a, g, e, etc...) since they wouldn't turn inside out quite right.  I'm not that advanced.  I can see it in my head but I'm not sure how to explain it to you.  So rough edges it is!

Don't sew ALL the way around the letter, otherwise you won't be able to stuff them!  For the letters with the long skinnies such as M and G, I sewed the edges of the skinny parts first, stuffed them, then sewed most of the rest, stuffed that, then sewed it shut.

When you stuff them all the way, shove the stuffing down as far as you can, sew the hole shut, then fluff the area so it would fill out.  Works like a charm!

And there you have it!  The letters are pretty light so I suppose you could hang them on the wall with double stick foam tape, but what I'm going to do is hand sew little ribbon loops on the back of the letters so I can hang them across the wall.  You could also just leave them on your couch like this as decoration :D

Hope you enjoyed this teeny tutorial!  If you do this and blog about it, please leave a link so I can check it out!

LOVE IT!!!!!! They turned out awesome! so simple and sweet. I saw a tutorial on ohdeedoh.com for felt letters and they had strung them to make a garland, it was also a fun way to hang them.
