Teeny Tutorial: Easy Art #4

Here we go with another Easy Art Tutorial!  This one is an abstract and even the little kids can make these look good so no worries!  All you have to do is make some swirly lines :)  You will need paper, a black oil pastel or black crayon and watercolors.

Start by making swirly lines with your black pastel or crayon.  The reason we use oil pastel or crayon is that it creates a resist to the water in the watercolor.  Therefore it's much easier to keep the paint in the lines without being ultra-careful.  You want to start in the middle of the paper (meaning not touching a side or corner) and keep the swirls within the border of the paper.

Finish up by touching the line back to the starting point to create a continuous swirly line.

Now go back over your lines to make them nice and dark and thick.

Once you've got your lines nice and thick, go ahead and start painting.  A good rule of thumb is to make sure you're using different colors in sections that touch each other.  For example, you wouldn't want to paint two sections that share a border the same color, but you could paint two sections that touch corners the same color since they don't share a border.  Does that make sense?  You'll see what I mean in a second.

Ok, see how the yellow sections don't actually touch each other?  The green shares borders with the yellow, but the yellow sections only touch corners.  These also look really cool when you use a ton of different colors but I wasn't feeling that today :)

Sorry about the colors in the pictures, it's really cloudy today and I couldn't get good light in my living room.  I think you get the gist of it though!  Hope you enjoy this tutorial, and like always, if you end up doing it and posting on your blog, be sure to send me a link!  I'd love to see your work!

I LOVE this tutorial! I did it and then my little sister saw it & posted it as her about me in her graduating poster. She says it means how simple her life seems but that it's twisted at the same time...
Just thought I'd tell you!
